Mums Eulogy
Our lovely mum Ella Defreitas was born on the 24th of October 1936 in St. Vincent in the West Indies, to Eugene and Samual Dacosta. Mum was one of five sisters and seven brothers.
Mum came to England in 1958 and married in 1959, mum had 5 children Peggy, Flavia, Paul, Leslie and Giles. Mum had a few jobs over the years, but mums’ priority was her family, her strong faith, and her many friends. Despite the sudden death of Paul in 1991 and Dads long illness which she devotedly cared for him including his dementia, Mums faith sustained her.
Mums’ grandchildren Daniel, Matthew, Madeleine, Jamie and Freddie gave her much joy and she spent time caring for them, even going to America to look after Matthew and Madeleine. Following Dads death in 1999 she became friends with Elena, over the next 20 years they had many holidays and outings, so mum finally had some time to herself, as her life had been one of devotion and caring for her family.
Mum was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2023 and we were able to devote our time caring for her. Daniel was always with mum and helped particularly with lifting her. Jamie and Freddie used to encourage her to eat.
We know we were incredibly lucky to have such a wonderful Mum, she taught us compassion, honesty, integrity and caring for others. Although we are heartbroken and miss her, we know she is at rest. Mum was very funny and had many sayings and funny stories which we will always remember.
Thank you to so many of you who came to see mum and sit and chat with her, Mum was friendly and chatty and that stayed with her until the end. We hope you all have some happy memories of mum to remember her.
Rest in peace mum and thank you for all your love and devotion.
Mum’s Poem
God looked around his garden
and found an empty place,
He then looked down upon the Earth
and saw your tired face.
He put his arms around you
and lifted you to rest,
God’s garden must be beautiful
he only takes the best.
He knew that you were suffering
he knew you were in pain.
He knew that you would never
get well on Earth again.
He saw the road was getting rough
and the hills were hard to climb.
So he closed your weary eyelids
and whispered, ‘Peace Be Thine’.
It broke our hearts to lose you
but you didnt go alone,
for part of us went with you
the day God called you home
