Mrs Mary Elizabeth Price (nee Briggs)

Born 29 October 1939 to Geoff & Kathleen Briggs, at Rectory Farm, East Keswick.

Mary is the second of 4 Briggs children and is survived by Anne (eldest – living at Scholes, nr Leeds) and John (youngest – living in Belize, Central America).  The other brother, Peter, died many years ago.

The Price family were also living in East Keswick and the families knew each other well.  Mary has therefore known Richard since childhood, also being close friends with Richard’s sister, Helen.

After her education, Mary remained working on the farm in East Keswick until they married.

Mary and Richard were married in February 1962, moving to Bramley, Leeds where Richard was curate.  Within a couple of years, they moved to All Hallows, nearer Leeds city centre, which proved to be the main formative years.

They had four of children: David (born 1964), Elizabeth (born 1965), Rosemary (born 1968) & Andrew (born 1970).

The family moved to Birkenhead in 1974, then to Mottram in 1978 and finally to Nantwich in 1988.  When Richard retired they moved to Cowling.

Mary enjoyed singing, gardening, baking, knitting & sewing and loved her animals especially cats, dogs & horses.  As well as church choirs, Mary sang with Glossop Choral Society (while at Mottram) and with Nantwich Choral Society.

During the time at Mottram, Mary was involved with a Riding for the Disabled centre in the nearby village of Broadbottom.

Mary was a strong, kind, at times an opinionated person who had a strong sense of pride in her family, she was a nurturer, whether that be her children, grandchildren or her animals, she loved nothing more than to be surrounded by family and look after all.

Canon Rev John Richard Price

Born 13th September 1934, died 8th May 2020

Richard was born in 1934, the third of four children born to Stanley and Kitty Price.  During the war, aged only nine Richard was evacuated to Buckden House, Wharfedale.   He retained a lifelong affection for the Yorkshire dales retiring to Cowling with Mary, after 50 years’ service as a Minister in the Church of England.

After the war in 1948 Richard’s family moved south to Kings Langley, Hertfordshire and Richard became a pupil at Watford Grammar.  A quiet child, Richard invented games and wrote “plays” developing a love of language. Whilst a teenager he also became a gifted pianist, and continued to play throughout his life.

During Richard’s national service in the RAF he studied Russian later taking his first degree at Merton College, Oxford in modern languages (along with Spanish). After this he found his true vocation in the church and was ordained in 1961.

In retirement, Richard was also able to indulge his passion for walking in the Dales once again; it was an area that was permanently mapped out in his mind.

Richard was kind, patient and a true gentleman; with a great love for other people, always a twinkle in his eye and an unassuming character, he was well appreciated by all who knew him.
