Michael Bray was a distinguished lawyer, a trusted adviser and a deeply caring family man. He passed away in London on 27 September 2025, aged 78.

Michael studied law before joining Coward Chance (later Clifford Chance) in 1970. His calm judgement, intellect and instinct for finding clarity in complexity saw him become a partner in 1976. Over more than four decades he helped shape modern financial practice globally, and many younger lawyers credit him as a mentor who gave confidence and sharp insight in equal measure.

He served as Global Head of Finance & Capital Markets (1995–2000) and Global Managing Partner (2000–2002), contributing greatly to the firm’s international development and culture of excellence.

Michael continued to share his expertise at Grimaldi Alliance, and in organisations committed to social good. He played a key role in strengthening governance at Junior Achievement (JA) worldwide, leading to the creation of the Michael Bray Award for Good Governance in his honour.

For all his professional achievements, Michael’s greatest devotion was to his family. He was a loving husband to Gabrielle, a proud father and stepfather, and “Grandpa Mike” to a growing and adored family of grandchildren.

Michael will be remembered for his integrity, wisdom, wit and the kindness that defined his life. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy and a family and community who loved him very deeply.
