Sam was born and raised in Halifax, West Yorkshire.  He was educated at Salter Hebble Primary School and then Crossley Heath Grammar School.  From there, he went to Durham University, where he gained a First Class Honours Degree in Maths.

During his life, he played many sports but his love was cricket, playing successfully into his forties.  He lived his life to the full,  never missing an opportunity to widen his horizons.  He especially enjoyed successfully climbing Kilimanjaro in 2019.
